Palm III IIIX IIIXE losing memory when changing batteries - PDA Capacitor Repair

The Palm III series is a true tank that can run indefinately with standard AAA batteries. But if you device has started to lose memory when you switch batteries, the power seems to be draining too fast,  or you have noticed other instabilities around battery replacement -  you likely need a new memory capacitor. Read this do it yourself guide to fix your PDA.

This take apart guide can help you learn about replacing the memory capacitor in your Palm III series PDA.

Proceed with this repair at your own risk. This repair might void your warranty. This guide is provided for educational purposes, but should only be completed by a skilled repair person.


Tools Required:
  • Soldering Iron
  • Miniture flathead & philips screwdrivers.
  • Anti-Static Wrist Band
  • Replacement Palm III Capacitor

 Step 1: Remove the 4  philips screws at the back of the case.

Step 2:  On both sides of the case there are 3 small tabs. Gently insert your small flathead screwdriver (or pry tool) into these slots to release the casing.

Step 3:  Desolder the two points for the capacitor as shown by the red arrows. Clean up both points - then replace with the new memory capacitor and resolder the points. MAKE SURE YOU MAINTAIN THE CORRECT + - POLARITY. THE negative side (The long arm side on top of the cap) should be facing the right side. The positive point under the cap should be facing the left side. You also want to make sure that you don't touch the capacitor body with the iron tip, or apply too much heat for too long as it is easy to damage the capacitor.
   
Step4: The case just snaps back together. Screw back the 4 screws back into the rear of the case. Put fresh batteries into the device and turn it on - and then test removing the batteries. If everything works normally, and your device retains memory when switching the batteries - Congratulations on your successful repair!
